The reveal that puts everything in perspective comes incredibly late in the book, frequently leaving you lost and bewildered as everyone besides Harrow acts with outside knowledge. Like GIDEON THE NINTH, HARROW THE NINTH is a book that requires patience. You see, Harrow’s never heard of a Gideon in her life. But wait, I hear you say, her cavalier wasn’t Ortus, it was Gideon! What happened to Gideon? That question, my friends, is the crux of the entire book. Unsurprisingly, HARROW THE NINTH is an unusual book, told in alternating perspectives: Harrow’s present day recollections are told in second person, while flashbacks to previous events at Canaan House, the location where she underwent a series of trials to become a Lyctor, accompanied by her cavalier Ortus, are told in third person. Harrow trains for the confrontation, but soon realizes not all the other Lyctor’s are her allies. Imbued with even greater necromantic power than she’s had before, Harrow barely gets a moment to rest before she’s confronted with the news that the Emperor is at war with a deadly enemy, and it will be at the Lyctor sanctuary in a matter of months. Harrow the Ninth achieved her dream of becoming one of the Emperor’s Lyctors, but the process nearly cost her her life.

She was incredibly moving, I had to wipe my tears away listening to this waiting for my daughter to finish dance post shared by Stacy D (opens in new tab) The audiobook is narrated by Saskia Maarleveld, who brings a fiery Mila to life. The book is a testament to the loss and destruction the individuals of this region have and unfortunately continue to endure. However, that did not play into my review at all. I looked forward to finding out how much was inspired by true events and what was fictionalized for the book and the author's note did not disappoint.ĭid I have a harder time than usual getting through this given the current events unfolding in Ukraine? Absolutely. I loved how Kate Quinn showcases how Mila navigates love, loss and leadership. Both were incredibly engaging, and I enjoyed the snippets from Mila's official and unofficial memoirs, which were unique ways to start chapters. Told in two timelines, starting with Mila Pavlichenko's story from student in the library to sharpshooter on the battlefield, as well as Mila's press tour in Washington DC. "The Diamond Eye is beautiful, suspenseful, heartbreaking and inspiring. A post shared by Nikki Marie (opens in new tab) But I wasn’t going to tell my sister that just hearing this girl’s name gave me a thrill. “In their preppy white sorority house with the big columns on the front.” “How hard could it be? But there’s also a tree lighting, and, like, cocktails.” “What do you know from setting up a Christmas tree, Jew boy?” Setting up a Christmas tree, or something.”ĭelia laughed again. First there’s a charity bit, where I’m helping a bunch of sorority girls with their community project. “Old enough to ask for help when I need it.” Her laughter was so loud that I had to hold the phone away from my ear. “I have a date, and I don’t know what to wear.” Delia was in med school, and you got further with her if you spoke in medical terms. Luckily, my older sister answered on the first ring. That was four more minutes than I’d ever spent before trying to decide what to wear. For five long minutes I’d stood there inspecting my shirts, tossing them one by one on the bed. With a growing sense of panic, I pawed through the clothes in my narrow little dorm room closet. As a Cuban immigrant, the condition of her life in this country has always come with an asterisk. This is not to say that my mom’s fears are baseless. Trying to find the catalyst for this particular anxious iteration was as futile as attempting to determine what, precisely, precipitated a volcanic eruption or an earthquake. Fear was simply the organizing principle of my mom’s worldview. As we walked the aisles of Home Depot, searching for door guards and deadbolts, it occurred to me that I was missing the point: there was no specific concern. Certainly nothing that would prompt my mom to change her locks for the first time in 13 years. A certain level of suspicion comes with living in south Florida, but I saw no evidence of increased crime in my hometown. Citing recent security concerns, my mom was determined to change the locks on her front door. I’d been back home for five hours and we’d already been to Home Depot twice. People do not get sick, they do not have to work, they do not die, and they have invented an AI system called the Thunderhead that runs the world. Humanity has overcome all of its problems. Please go read the first book, but if it’s been a while the series takes place in a utopian society. This book is a sequel, so if you are here you are lost. All five hundred pages kept me spellbound. I was stuck in the story from the beginning to the end. Usually, when I am a hundred pages in I am still willing to put the book down, and pick it back up later with no problem. I started it one morning thinking I’ll just read a chapter or two, and the next thing I know I am a hundred pages in and see no way to stop without having a mini emotional breakdown. I was very stressed when reading this book. Most of my thoughts were filled with worry for my fictional children. oh no.” some of them were much more complicated. Some of them were along the lines of “oh no oh no. I had a lot of thoughts reading this book. I hope you have missed them as much as I have. We are finally doing a full-length book review again! It’s been so long. And that's just the beginning of the kind of brotherhood they never knew they could have. For deep learning to truly take off we must move beyond these cheap parlor tricks towards systems that can do more than write a few simple correlations into code. As companies rush to deploy deep learning, they are building our modern world upon an extraordinarily fragile house of cards. Driverless cars can slam on the brakes or accelerate towards an obstacle with the slightest deviation from their training examples, while image understanding algorithms are rendered helpless by a few spurious pixels. Neural translation algorithms hyped as replacing humans in reality oscillate wildly between human fluency and indecipherable gibberish with the change of a single word. Rather than “learn” about the world, today’s algorithms merely encode databases of simplistic statistical correlations that yield results that are entirely dependent on how similar the inputs are to their training data. The problem is that in the real world this correlative house of cards comes rapidly crashing down. Given ideal circumstances, deep learning models can churn out what appear to be extraordinary feats of near-human or even super-human intelligence. Today’s deep learning shares much in common with the cheap parlor tricks of old. It has grown from a company of just Campbell to a full roster of more than 40 artists and writers of different nationalities, genders, orientations and religious beliefs.
